Tiny meals, usually twice a day

How often to feed a betta?

Bettas have a tiny stomach and a talent for looking betrayed. The usual rhythm is two small pellet meals a day, not an all-day flake buffet. A weekly lighter day helps more than a Sunday feast. Overfeeding shows up as bloat, constipation, and a filthy nano tank—not as a “happy chubby betta.”

Betta foods we actually rank

Mini pellets, insect granules, and shrimp patties—not goldfish flakes.

How often is actually enough?

For an adult in a heated tank, two meals beat one huge dump. Count pellets that would fit on the betta’s eye, not a fluffy pinch of flakes.

Adult, heated 5–10 gal
2 tiny meals / day
A few pellets per meal, eaten in under 2 minutes.
New / recovering betta
1–2 even smaller meals
Watch leftover pellets on the floor.
Weekly reset
One lighter / fast day
Helps more than skipping three days then overfeeding.

Bettas will beg. Begging is not a hunger strike. Leftover pellets in a nano tank become ammonia overnight.

How to portion betta meals

  • Use a betta-labeled mini pellet or granule. Ranked options are on the betta-food guide.
  • Feed at the surface or mid-column where the fish actually hunts. Don’t bury pellets in gravel.
  • Count pellets. If two are left after a minute, you already overshot.
  • Shrimp patties and extras are meals, not a second dinner on top of a full pellet ration.
  • Unplug the filter flow only if food blows past the fish—then put it back.

What overfeeding looks like

  • Bloat and stringy waste after rich meals or too-frequent feeding.
  • Cloudy nano tanks from pellets you didn’t siphon.
  • Feeding more because the betta “looks skinny” in a bowl without a heater—fix the tank, not the calorie count.

A fasting day is for a well-conditioned adult, not a fish that already isn’t eating. If a betta refuses food, check temperature and water, not a new flavor first.

When to change the schedule

Match the calendar to the fish in front of you.

  • Swollen belly that doesn’t recede between meals
  • Pellets on the substrate the next morning
  • A betta that spits pellets—size or freshness is off

FAQ

Can I feed a betta once a day?

Some keepers do one meal. Two smaller meals are easier to keep from bloating. The total still has to be tiny.

Should I fast a betta every week?

A lighter day is common for adults that eat well. Don’t stack fasts on a fish that already skipped meals.

Is it okay to leave a weekend feeder block?

Those blocks usually foul water more than they feed a betta well. For a short trip, skip food rather than melting a block into a 5-gallon.

What food should I use?

Betta mini pellets or granules—see the betta-food guide. Goldfish flakes are the wrong staple.
